Orthodox Icon Painting

Antique Religious Art Icon.

Hand painted onto a salvaged pine panel, this striking icon depicts the Madonna and her child- also known as a Theotokos.

Painted in warm hues of red, brown and gold, typical for old Byzantine Art.

Circa early 1800s, this is in very good condition for its age- there are some signs of historic wood worm to the reverse and the artwork has slightly flaked away at the corners.

The later addition of a hook has been added to the reverse, making this ideal for hanging on a wall.

Religious icons like this were popular throughout Eastern Europe, being produced from as early as 330 AD- Orthodox artwork has become very collectible and this particular piece is full of primitive charm!
