Antique Pine Cabinet, Carved Witches Mark

Antique Pine Cabinet.

Sympathetically restored- this beautiful two door armoire is handmade out of pitch pine, which has developed a subtle patina from over the years and this makes a delightful addition to any home and is full of primitive charm.

The left door has two interior latches to keep this secure and the right door a simply twisting catch on the top, all hand forged and completely original. There is a decorative key plate to the front centre of each door, sadly the lock no longer works.

My favourite aspect of this piece is a hand-carved witches mark on the reverse, an incomplete hexafoil- also known as a daisy wheel, these were carved in old homes, on old furniture and even smaller objects such as tankards to protect the owner from evil spirits! These were used during the medieval period until the late 19th century.

Inside are three staggered shelves which are not fixed in place- making this ideal to use as a free standing larder cupboard or even in a bathroom as storage for toiletries.

There are signs of historic woodworm,

 these have been treated with 'Everbuild Triple Action Wood Treatment' as an added precaution.

Overall this is in very good condition for it's age, a new plinth has been added around the base allow it to stand steady and I have lightly buffed the wood with a nourishing beeswax.
